Sports and masculinity are connected because masculinity is usually proven or becomes noticed while one is engaging in a sport activity- Men engage in sport activities and competitions, to show/prove their masculinity to others. Society promotes sports as such a strong suit to young men to be able to get them involved and make them aware of their own masculinity.
Is it only to prove masculinity that men engage in sports? Surely that's not why parents get their young children involved to begin with.
ReplyDeleteSo by saying that masculinity is proven by playing sports, does that mean that when a female is playing a sport, she is then proving that she has a touch of masculinity? Or can a female be good at a sport and still not be masculine? Just questioning because I want to know how others feel about the situation. I am a big sports fan, and very involved in sports. I grew up playing VERY competitive softball, and even helping coach softball as well as helping my little cousin with his wrestling skills. I am a female but since I know, for instance, wrestling moves.. does that make me more masculine or just interested in sports?
